Rare 1900s Wooden Beads Long Italy
If this rare rosary could talk then we might have a hit movie! My great grandmother Haley brought this rosary with her from England in the 1900’s. A devote converted Catholic, this rosary, by far was her favorite. Grandma owned dozens of rosaries. In the 1980’s, Madonna made this style rosary a fashion piece, not just a religious trinket.
My mother Eleanor Haley was a pack rat and thankfully saved so many of grandma’s antique rosary, catholic prayer books and more.
Memories of grandma kneeling to pray haunt me as I write. The vision of her holing this black antique rosary dance in my head. She was slight woman made of cast iron. Born in the 1890’s she was fiesta. Passing away at the age of 94 again proved to me a live of living well, loving, and cooking fresh food was part of what kept grandma kicking all those years. At 84 grandma Cumstay – Haley had her first bush with health issue. We had her in our lives for another ten years.
Small moments with her shape who I am today. Doing her hair. Talking with her on the “porch”. Making her tea with condensed milk. Watching her pray as she touch each bead of this antique rosary She always knew if I was lying ad busted me on my first crush. I was devastated she knew. Grandma dug in the trash and pieced together a note from my crush. Sneaky!
In 1987 grandma gave me her last kiss. She only passed away when I told her “don’t worry about us grandma, someone is going to help take care of us.” Grandma only passed because I said it was OK to leave us. Financial concerns over the years concerned her about how we would “live”…unfortunately the person who was “going to help take care of us by giving us jobs” was Sam Kinison. Story to be told later.
Years after grandma passed I remember my sister, Malika, do you remember grandma’s old black antique rosary? I said, “of course I do, why?”
“I just wanted to know you remember her the same way I do”.
You mean with her antique rosary in church?
“Yup.” We smiled at each and kept driving.
